School Counseling Practicum SC 615

 

 

Course Description

The Practicum in School Counseling is the initial opportunity for students to synthesize the theoretical information on individual counseling and small group work from their coursework and apply it with school-aged students. The coursework provides an opportunity for reviewing theoretical models of counseling and consultation and practice counseling skills in a laboratory setting as well as in the field. This course is designed to provide practical application of content related to school counseling, in addition to a participatory experience in a school setting, under the clinical supervision of a qualified University professor and a qualified on-site supervisor. The on-site supervisor will meet with the practicum student for supervision one hour per week. The weekly campus class meeting will reflect a combination of didactic, discussion, and experiential teaching methodology, with opportunity for special discussion related to site issues. The requirements for the Practicum are 100 total hours on site, with 40 hours in direct service, including 10 hours of group work.

Time Requirements

This course will be offered over a 15-week period and is a 45 hour 3 credit graduate course. Modules will be completed one per week.

 

Hardware and Computer Skill Requirements

 Students may use either a Macintosh computer or a PC with Windows 2000 or higher. Students should possess basic word processing skills and have Internet access as well as an active email account. Students also are expected to have a basic knowledge of how to use a Web browser, such as Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, Safari, etc..

Curriculum Design

 The Practicum in School Counseling is the initial opportunity for students to synthesize the theoretical information on individual counseling and small group work from their coursework and apply it with school-aged students. The University professor will contact students for paired supervision —a least twice a term for each student. The on-site supervisor will meet with the practicum student for supervision one hour per week. The requirements for the Practicum are 100 total hours on site, with 40 hours in direct service, including 10 hours of group work. Student will be involved in a variety of tasks for completion of course requirements: readings, reports on readings, exams, journal and reflection entries, projects related to real world learning environments, direct practice in the school setting and development of instructional counseling strategies for specific content areas.

 

Course Materials

 

No specific text.

Online readings and Web site reviews (including journal articles and best practices from the body of educational research) will be assigned during the course to enhance learning. These readings will be presented as annotated Web sites within the course content.

 

Student Performance Requirements:

Students will complete on-site experiences and required supervision sessions.

Students will complete assigned readings, written assignments, applications/practice/direct observations in the educational setting and forum postings (as required) in each module. Students will complete tests and special projects as listed in the module content.

 

 

Session Outline

 

Module 1: Expectations of Supervision

Objectives:

  1. The student will write a paper addressing the specific expectations of supervision she/he has for the practicum and share with class.
  2. The student will become familiar with a school setting for the elementary/secondary practicum experience.
  3. The student will complete weekly case notes, audio/video recording and personal observations and present one case in detail.
  4. The student will share one resource with class that will help in the professional development of a school counselor.
  5. The student will complete all required supervision for the week.

 

Module 2: Ethical, Legal and Multicultural Considerations

 

Objectives:

  1. The student will write a paper addressing the observations and experiences with ethical, legal and multicultural experience over the last two weeks.
  2. The student will observe the on-site school counselor and participate in activities agreed to by both with emphasis on ethical, legal and multicultural experiences.
  3. The student will complete weekly case notes on a personal observation, an audio/video recording to share with the class.
  4. The student will share one resource with class that will help in the professional development of a school counselor.
  5. The student will complete all required supervision for the week.

 Module 3: Development of Personal Theory

 

 

Objectives:

  1. The student will write a paper addressing their personal counseling theory that will be used when working with students, families and school staff.
  2. The student will observe the on-site school counselor and participate in activities agreed to by both with emphasis on the development of a personal theory of counseling.
  3. The student will complete weekly case notes, audio/video recording and personal observations and present one case in detail.
  4. The student will share one resource with class that will help in the professional development of a school counselor.
  5. The student will complete all required supervision for the week.

 Module 4: Building Collaborative Relationships

 

Objectives:

  1. The student will write a paper addressing the collaborative relationships observed in the practicum with information of the strengths and weakness of the collaborative process.
  2. The student will observe the on-site school counselor and participate in activities agreed to by both with an emphasis on how to build collaborative relationships.
  3. The student will complete weekly case notes, audio/video recording and personal observations and present one case in detail.
  4. The student will share one resource with class that will help in the professional development of a school counselor.
  5. The student will complete all required supervision for the week.

 Module 5: Working with Students with Diverse Needs Including Abuse (Substance/Physical/Mental/Emotional), Gender, Divorce, and Health Issues

 

Objectives:

  1. The student will research specific interventions to use with school-aged children with diverse needs and include information on services available through current school, district and state.
  2. The student will observe the on-site school counselor and participate in activities agreed on by both with emphasis on working with school-aged children with diverse needs.
  3. The student will complete weekly case notes, audio/video recording and personal observations and present one case in detail.
  4. The student will share one resource with class that will help in the professional development of a school counselor.
  5. The student will complete all required supervision for the week.

Module 6:Multicultural Issues in School Counseling

 

Objectives:

  1. The student will research the use of multicultural counseling in the school setting and include information on services available through current school, district and state for this population.
  2. The student will observe the on-site school counselor and participate in activities agreed on by both with emphasis on issues of multicultural counseling.
  3. The student will complete weekly case notes, audio/video recording and personal observations and present one case in detail.
  4. The student will share one resource with class that will help in the professional development of a school counselor.
  5. The student will complete all required supervision for the week.

 

Module 7: Crisis Management for the School Counselor

 

Objectives:

  1. The student will interview school counselors at both the elementary and secondary levels for information on the development and implementation of a school and community crisis management plan.
  2. The student will observe the on-site school counselor and participate in activities agreed on by both.
  3. The student will complete weekly case notes, audio/video recording and personal observations and present one case in detail.
  4. The student will share one resource with class that will help in the professional development of a school counselor in crisis management.
  5. The student will complete all required supervision for the week.

  Module 8: School Counselor’s Role in NCLB, ADA and IDEA

 Objectives:

    1. The student will interview an elementary and a secondary school counselor on their involvement in NCLB, ADA, and IDEA regulations.
    2.  The student will observe the on-site school counselor and participate in activities agreed to by both with emphasis on NCLB, ADA and IDEA regulations.
    3. The student will complete weekly case notes, audio/video recording and personal observations and present one case in detail.
    4. The student will share one resource with class that will help in the professional development of a school counselor in crisis management.
    5. The student will complete all required supervision for the week.

Module 9: Academic Interventions and the School Counselor

 

Objectives:

  1. The student will interview and observe school counselors at both the elementary and secondary levels to assist in understanding the relationship of school counseling to the academic mission of the school.
  2. The student will observe the on-site school counselor and participate in activities agreed to by both with special attention to understanding curriculum designs, lesson planning and classroom management skills.
  3. The student will complete weekly case notes, audio/video recording and personal observations and present one case in detail.
  4. The student will share one resource with class that will help in the professional development of a school counselor in crisis management.
  5. The student will complete all required supervision for the week.

 Module 10: Assessment and the School Counselor

 

Objectives:

  1. The student will interview and observe school counselors at both the elementary and secondary levels to gather information on the assessment and the interpretation of assessments used to gather information on students’ strengths and needs for counseling/academic interventions.
  2. The student will observe the on-site school counselor and participate in activities agreed to by both with special attention to understanding the use of assessments, interpretations, and assistance in meeting student’s unique needs.
  3. The student will complete weekly case notes, audio/video recording and personal observations and present one case in detail.
  4. The student will share one resource with class that will help in the professional development of a school counselor in the use of assessments for the development of academic/counseling interventions.
  5. The student will complete all required supervision for the week.

  Module 11 Effective Leadership and the School Counselor

            Objectives:

  1. The student will write a report, based on interviews and observations of other school counselors, on the qualities, principles, skills and effective leadership styles necessary to implementing a comprehensive school counseling program.
  2. The student will complete weekly case notes, audio/video recording and personal observations and present one case in detail.
  3. The student will share one resource with class that will help in the professional development of a school counselor in the area of effective leadership.
  4. The student will complete all required supervision for the week.

 

Student Requirements

  1. Students will complete weekly written assignments.                                                 25% of grade

  2. Students will complete all activities required by on-site supervisor.           25% of grade.

  3. Students will complete all activities based on audio/video recordings and sharing with peers and University professor.                                                                                                                     25% of grade
